Fluoride plays an important role in preventive dentistry

  • It helps developing enamel, which is resistant to decay.
  • Aids in the remineralisation of early enamel defects.
  • Retards growth of bacteria.
    • Fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes are best given to children when they can expectorate, which is at least 4 years old. Professionally applied fluorides are available in the form of gel sand varnishes. These can be applied only in the dental office.

Indications

  • Caries active children
  • Reduced saliva secretion, particularly when a child is receiving medication or radiation therapy.
  • Children who are mentally and physically challenged
  • After gum surgery
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Areas where there is no community water fluoridation.

Fluoride gel

  • Cotton Application :
    • Keep the tooth surface continuously soaked with fluoride solution
    • for 4 minutes for caries-active cases and 1 minute for caries-inactive cases
    • and ask the patient to expectorate immediately.
  • Do’s & don’ts after gel application:
    • Expectorate soon after application.
    • Avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing for 30 minutes after treatment.
  • Tray Technique:
    • Using disposable trays.
    • Load one-third of the tray with gel.
    • Place the loaded tray on the arches.
    • Keep the tray in your mouth for 4 minutes with light biting force.
    • After 4 minutes, remove the tray and use a high-volume evacuator, and ask the patient to expectorate immediately.

Fluoride Varnishes:

  • Brushes were used to apply it to the tooth surfaces.
  • It dries quickly after application.
  • More convenient,the patient can eat and drink soon after treatment.
