It is a common eye condition caused by uncontrolled diabetes, leading to changes in the blood vessels of the retina.

The changes can either lead to leakage of blood vessels, leading to macular edema, or can lead to blockage of blood vessels, leading to ischemia and the growth of new vessels.

Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
  • Moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
  • Severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
  • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Intravitreal anti‑VEGF agents
  • Laser treatment (focal, PRP)

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the common complications of diabetes caused by damage to the retina as a result of high blood glucose levels. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it may cause partial or complete loss of vision. A late diagnosis can also make the treatment less effective and even lead to permanent blindness.

The best outcome for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy is obtained when it is diagnosed in its initial stages. Hence, controlling your blood sugar levels and having routine eye checkups are highly recommended for protecting your eyes.
